Zombieland – Can Zombie films be funny?

December 16, 2011 1 comment

Zombieland is a 2009 film about a group of mismatch survivors of a Zombie apocalypse.

The film actually deals with real apocalyptic Zombie themes. Such as survival, the need to band together to get through the madness, the constant need to be on the look-out for flesh eating undead. Along with the actual apocalyptic themes present, the filmmakers are able to insert humor into the theme.

One interesting bout of humor is the reoccurring “list” that constantly appears, which gives the viewer hints and tips on surviving a undead Zombie apocalypse. Some tips are #8 “get a kick-ass partner” or #18 “Limber up”. Other good tips include #7 “Travel Light”, #29 “The Buddy System, #31 “Check the backseat”, or #49 “always have back-up”. Granted this are all reasonable tips, the filmmakers present them in such a humorous way that the viewer becomes smitten with the film.
The Undead seem to come alive with the film, which of course is ironic. I would recommend this film to anyone looking for a good apocalyptic plot without being scared to death every ten seconds.

So Yes, Zombie Films can be true the nature of Zombie films and still be funny. Don’t believe me? Watch it and see for yourself.

Atwood – Just Not For Me.

December 16, 2011 Leave a comment

Sadly, Atwood is just not for me.

I will admit her story concepts and plots are very compelling, and that anyone should become immersed in her novels. I could not, for the life of me, get into either of her novels “Oryx and Crake” or “The Year of the Flood”.

I just found the writing dry, and I am the type of person that a book needs to draw me within the first few pages or else I can not finish it.

I do think the concept of Corporate Greed and Commercialism very compelling. Sadly the novel just did not do it for me.

Atwood’s novel is a platform for what could happen to our future. A perfect example is what could/is happening is the situation with the Commons on campus. It is a micro example of what Atwood was talking about. [Or at least writing about] Atwood deals with the consequences of what will happen to our future if we continue down the path that Humanity is on. The novel “Oryx and Crake” looks at the social, economic and scientific aspects of a society that ‘may’ happen in our future.

All in All, this post is a short one, I just did not feel the draw from Atwood’s writing. These novels were just not for me.

Terminator [I’ll Be Back]

December 16, 2011 Leave a comment

For anyone who knows me, even slightly, understand I have a huge passion for the Terminator series. The Terminator is a move, created in 1984 by James Cameron. It focuses on machines that have self-aware AI and see the human race as a threat. Therefore they [Skynet and the self-aware machines] try to eliminate that threat of the humans. The movie is fast-paced and was a huge success, even though no one thought it would be. It launched a huge series about “The Terminator” – 4 movies and a TV-series.

The interesting part of the whole concept, is that Humans are basically wiped out by their own creation. The humans created Skynet as a military defense computer, the computer becomes self-aware and tries to “get rid of” the human race. This concept is the embodiment of the entire English course. It has all the elements that a good apocalyptic story should have, even the tiny seed of hope at the end of every movie. There is a threat to human existence, there is resistance to that threat, it creates and builds upon a fear that is already present within modern society. [Also it has terrifying robots that give me nightmares, but that is besides the point.]

Honestly, the first thing that comes to mind when someone says apocalyptic is Terminator. If you haven’t watched it, or have not watched it in years, plus take an hour or two and allow yourself to relive the excitement and terror. This would be and is my most recommended apocalyptic story concept of all time.

“The Terminator is a blazing, cinematic comic book, full of virtuoso moviemaking, terrific momentum, solid performances and a compelling story.

The clever script, cowritten by director James Cameron and producer Gale Anne Hurd, opens in a post-holocaust nightmare, A.D.2029, where brainy machines have crushed most of the human populace. From that point, Arnold Schwarzenegger as the cyborg Terminator is sent back to the present to assassinate a young woman named Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) who is, in the context of a soon-to-be-born son and the nuclear war to come, the mother of mankind’s salvation. ” – http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117795542?refcatid=31

It’s Time to get back into Blogging!

I thought I would start off my revisit to apocalyptic posting with a humorous look at the end of the world. I must place a foul language warning before viewing the video.

While the premise of the video may seem slightly unrealistic, it is a fundamentally something that could happen. Many writers, film makers and philosophers alike have predicated the end of the world. In our modern times, the idea of Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear Winter are a real possibility. During the Cold War, this was the threat on everyone’s mind. Yes, the video was made with social and racial stereotypes in mind, but the basic idea is simple and reasonably possible. I invite anyone to comment and have a discussion about the video.

Yes, someone could post and say “there is no deeper meaning, its just funny”. But what I am trying to show, is that we are deriving humor from the premise of the END OF THE WORLD, but very possible means. Does that not seem odd to anyone else?

Happy Movember Everyone :D

November 2, 2011 Leave a comment

Happy Nov 2nd – as we are all busy working away on our second set of English essays, let’s take a moment to talk about Movember.

The month that was once November is no more – it ’tis Movember now! The month to help change the face of men’s health.

Taken from the Movember website:
“During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer. On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.”

I would like to take a minute for everyone to check out classmate Kyle Suttie’s Movember page. He has joined in the effort to bring a change to the face of men’s health. Please take just one minute to support, share, donate, join the cause or tell someone else about it. If you follow Kyle via his Movember page this month, you will see him go from a naked hairless face to a fine Mustache by the end of the month.

The link above with take you directly to his personal Movember page.

Few Interesting Links.

October 28, 2011 Leave a comment

Just wanted to post a few interesting links for everyone to take a gander at. The first link is a wedding from the 2011 Zombie Walk in Toronto.

The second link is a letter about the Occupy Movement, which I found very interesting to read. I thought some other students may want to take the 3 seconds to take a peek at it.

The next link is to a group on Facebook. This group is “11-11-11 Pub Crawl is in bad taste” and it is a group that has gotten together because they feel the Nov 11th, 11am pub crawl that is being put on by the student body of NBCC is disrespectful.

I was very surprised to hear that there was a pub crawl going on, on Nov 11th and apparently during Remembrance Day Ceromines. I personaly find this to be very disrecptful to all the people that fought, died, lost their lives or lives of loved ones, ect – we should be remembering them and what happened. Not “pub crawling”. Just my two cents.

Quote “This group is being created so those who want to voice their opinion about the pub crawl, which has been organized by students of NBCC-SJ and the promotion of the event on campus as approved by NBCC faculty”
Quote “NBCC has approved the promotion of the event (with NO NBCC affiliation on any advertising/clothing) and the sale of tickets on campus”

Please take a few minutes to voice your concerns (if you have any) in the facebook group.

Saint John Haunted Houses

October 26, 2011 Leave a comment

Just wanted to post a few links to Haunted Houses that are happening around the city this week. I am hoping to attend as much as possible, and if I get the chance, I will post some photos and information about the events.

This first link is for a “Haunted Hotel” at Simonds High School. The price is 5$ and all proceeds are going towards the Children’s Wish Foundation. It runs Thursday Oct 27th 2011 from 7pm to 10pm.

This link is for the Saint John High School Haunted House. This Haunted House is 3$ and is in support of the Empty Stocking Fund. It runs from 7pm to 9pm on Thursday October 27th and Friday October 28th 2011.

This link is for the Haunted Zoo at our city`s Cherry Brook Zoo. This is regular priced admission (around ten dollars) and the funds help to feed the poor animals throughout the winter. The Haunted Zoo runs Friday – Saturday – Sunday – ( 28th – 29th – 30th ) from 530pm to 630pm, which is the children`s tour and costume parade, recommend for children under the age of 8. From the `spooky` hours of 7pm -830pm is the `scary` tour. Witch`s Brew to be given out to survivors of the tour.

I hope everyone gets a chance to check out at least one Haunted House, they are all in support of good causes and who doesn’t like a good scare once in awhile?
